About Lou Chalmer

Heal from chronic health conditions such as lupus, hypothyroidism, anxiety, and depression with a functional medicine professional.

Hi, I'm Lou.

Most of my clients are intelligent, proactive, and exhausted from trying everything. They've seen the specialists. They've read the research. They've changed their diet, tried the supplements, done the therapy.

And they still don't feel well.

What they usually need isn't more information. It's sequencing — understanding which systems are under strain, and stabilising them in the right order.

That's what I do.

I'm an integrative natural medicine practitioner and counsellor based in regional Victoria, working with clients across Australia and internationally. I specialise in complex chronic illness — particularly autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, Hashimoto's, POTS, mast cell disorders, fibromyalgia, hormonal dysregulation, mould exposure, and trauma-patterned stress.

How I Work

I approach every case as a systems problem rather than a symptom list.

When the body is struggling with multiple issues at once, the order of intervention matters more than the intervention itself. There's a sequence that creates traction — and a sequence that wastes energy.

In my experience, that sequence almost always begins here:

Sleep. Hydration. Fuelling. Airway. Immune load. Gut depth. Hormonal resilience.

When these foundations are stable, more complex work becomes possible and produces lasting results. Layering complexity onto an unstable system is one of the most common reasons people don't improve.

This framework is what I call Ecological Nutrition — the idea that your health is shaped by the interaction between your biology, your environment, your behaviour, and your emotional life. It draws on functional nutrition, nutrigenomics, nervous system physiology, psychoneuroimmunology, and Internal Family Systems–informed counselling. It is not a protocol. It is a way of reading what the body is doing and responding to what it actually needs.

In your first consultation, we'll go through your history in detail — not just your diagnoses, but the timeline, the patterns, what's improved and what hasn't, and what you've already ruled out. You'll leave with a clear understanding of where I think the bottlenecks are and a starting point that makes sense for your system specifically.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I came into this field through my own diagnoses of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, hormonal instability, and complex post-traumatic stress.

I know what it feels like to be told there's nothing more to be done. I also know what it takes to rebuild capacity slowly and methodically — and how different that process looks when you understand the underlying physiology rather than simply managing symptoms.

Over the past nine years, I've immersed myself in the intersection of nervous system regulation, metabolic function, genetics, and environmental medicine. That lived experience informs my clinical lens — but what defines my work is curiosity, precision, and a refusal to accept reductionist answers when the system is clearly more complex than the label it's been given.

"I'd done years of therapy. I'd been told to accept what happened, change how I think, move on. Nobody had ever asked why — why those patterns developed, what they were protecting me from, what they were afraid would happen if they let go. Working with Lou was the first time I felt truly seen and accepted, all of me. That experience of being met without judgment is what's allowed me to start trusting myself — maybe for the first time in my life."

What I'm Not Here to Do

I'm not here to dismiss what you're experiencing. I'm not here to put you on a fad diet or tell you your problems are stress-related. I'm not here to hand you a supplement protocol and call it a plan.

I'm here to help you understand your physiology well enough to work with it, rather than against it — and to build a path forward that actually holds.

I can't heal you. But I can help you see clearly, move in the right direction, and stop losing ground.
